The Objective of PawCloud

The objective of the app is to allow pet owners the opportunity to travel anywhere with their pets’ records at the palm of their hands. When planning travels, it is always hard to remember to bring your pets’ records for emergencies.

The goal of the app is to benefit pet owners and to give them a personal experience.

RESEARCH

After acknowledging the problem, the next step was to figure out how to take on the challenge. Coming from a veterinary medication, I knew that there were existing tools that users can use to cumulate and organize their pets' medical records.

"So what can make the app unique and different from others?"

The first step of the research process was to compare and analyze other apps/tools that are competitors to PawCloud. Both direct and indirect competitors were analyzed based on their unique, best, poor, and similar features. Examining competitors aided with coming up with ideas on how to make PawCloud different and stand out.

The next step to the research process was to create a User Persona. Who could the user most likely be and what could the user most likely be like?

I reached out to 7 people to have an in-depth conversation about their experiences with pet medical records. 4 of the 7 people interviewed are pet owners. The other 3 of the 7 people interviewed were staff members of an animal hospital.

Here are some responses that stuck out the most

"I do not keep records. If I need anything, I have to take my time to look through my emails"

"I do not carry records with me as I only bring my pets to one animal clinic. I can just call for records."

"I do not carry records with me as I expect my animal clinic to hold onto them and send them out for me"

"It can be hard to get records over the weekend if any emergencies occur as a lot of places are closed on the weekend."

After finishing all the interviews, I gathered all the data and arranged the data into 2 different affinity maps: 1 affinity map for the data from interviews with pet owners and 1 affinity map for the data from interviews with staff members of an animal hospital.

DEFINITION/IDEATION

"What now?"

User Interviews

After analyzing all of the information obtained from the interviews, the User Persona was created. Meet Brittany Haven!

From here on out, Brittany will represent the research findings, helping with all the design decisions!

Problem Statement

Brittany, a continuously-moving army wife needs an easy-to-use app to keep her pets’ records in order to be more  organized with their records and be prepared for any emergencies

UX Hypothesis

If an easy-to-use record-keeping tool designed for pet owners was created, the reminders and emailing feature would be the most utilized.

Storyboard

I created a storyboard to display Brittany's journey when she was faced with an emergency and needed to use the features that I was thinking of designing.

PROTOTYPING

"What's next?"

Now that there was valuable information obtained from the research process, I was able to start the design process!

User Flow

I sketched out a User Flow to get an understanding of how the flow of the user's journey would be like.

App Mid-Fidelity

I drafted out a mid-fidelity for both the app and website to get an understanding on what the screens would look like and to see how the screens would flow.

Website Mid-Fidelity

Mood Board

I drafted a mood board to reflect on which direction that design should take

TESTING/HIGH-FIDELITY

Now that I had a Mid-Fidelity, the next step was to conduct usability tests. With the information gathered from these tests, I can start to make iterations to create the High-Fidelity!

Usability Testing - Before Iterations

4 usability tests were conducted. Each user was given 3 tasks to complete.

1. Sign up

2. Add a Pet

3. Send Records

Here are some feedback that was given.

Usability Testing - Before Iterations

Based on the feedback obtained from the usability tests, changes were made.

Users wanted a background that was not so plain but also not too overwhelming to look at.

Users also liked the color scheme of the app, but they wanted the colors to be a little bit brighter to make the app less dull.

Usability Testing - After Iterations

After iterations were made, I conducted 3 more usability tests to obtain more feedback. The users were tasked with the same 3 tasks.

Down below is the feedback that was given. Based on the feedback, minor iterations were made to create the end product - the High-Fidelity Prototype.

High-Fidelity Prototype

YAY! We have made it to the High-Fidelity Prototype. Click on the button below to view the High-Fidelity Prototype!

CONCLUSION

I really enjoyed working on this app idea. I hope that this app, if created, will be able to be of great use to users and better the care that pet owners provide for their pets.

Future potential considerations:

  • Allow users to choose from a light/dark theme

  • Add a carousel on the home screen to allow users to add in their own photos of their pets to make the app more personal for each user
